This edition of BUY IT OR DOWNLOAD IT features Brandy's fifth studio album Human. Throughout the years, Brandy's trademark sound has been the laid back R&B ("Brokenhearted," "Baby," "Sittin' Up in My Room," "The Boy is Mine," "Have You Ever," "Full Moon" to name a few) that only she can sing so well. With Afrodisiac's Timbaland-heavy production, the singer broke away from her "Rodney Jerkins (Darkchild)" sound, and explored different areas of her voice to critical success, but to lackluster album sales.
Now signed to Epic, Brandy reunited with Rodney to create Human, and the result is amazing. Clearly, the album is inspired by the recent trauma that the singer has gone through, and is filled with hard hitting ballads and mid-tempos which showcase B-Rocka's amazing voice. I believe that Brandy solidifies herself as one of my generation's best vocalists with Human.
On songs such as "Right Here (Departed)," "Something is Missing (Acapella)," "Long Distance," and "Fall," Brandy sings with sincerity...and you can FEEL what she's saying. Other tracks such as "Human," "Piano Man," and "Camouflage," take a pop turn, but still fit in well with the rest of the album's 15 tracks. Human is a very risky release these days. It seems that no one has the audacity to put out a mainstream R&B album that doesn't have something for the clubs (I Am...Sasha Fierce anyone?), but Brandy doesn't need to make us dance to connect with us.
If last week's 808s & Heartbreak was about the end of a relationship, Brandy's Human picks up where Kanye left off and gives us the strength to move on. [BUY IT]
